Pseudomonas aeruginosa is becoming one of the more important cause of gram-negative infections healthcare-associated and increasingly resistant to multiple antibiotics.
It is the most common, opportunistic and hard to eradicate pathogen isolated from patients who have been hospitalized longer than one week, and it is a frequent cause of nosocomial infections. Pseudomonas infections are complicated and can be life-threatening.
PSEUDOMONAS AERUGINOSA ARE GRAM-NEGATIVE BACTERIA
Gram–negative bacteria are enclosed in a protective capsule, preventing white blood cells (which fight infections) from ingesting the bacteria. Beneath the protecting capsule is an outer membrane that prevents against antibiotics, such as penicillin to be effective. If altered, the membrane can release endotoxins (toxic substances), that will contribute to worsen symptoms during the infections like:
Pneumonia, Peritonitis, Brucellosis, Campylobacter infections, Cholera, Escherichia coli infections, Whooping cough, Salmonella, Typhoid fever, Shigellosis, Tularemia and of course Pseudomonas infections.
Unfortunately, Gram-negative bacteria are increasing their resistance to antibiotics. This may depend on the mutation of their genes: in some cases, a bacterium can “take” the antibiotic resistance gene of another bacterium and make it its own.
It is a spore-forming bacterium: this means that, under conditions of poor nutrition and unfavorable environment, it is capable of producing spores, a particular cell characterized by a cover that makes it resistant even to large variations in temperature and disinfectants.
PSEUDOMONAS AERUGINOSA INFECTIONS
Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections range from minor external infections to severe and life-threatening. These infections occur more frequently and tend to be more severe in those who are debilitated by certain serious illnesses; diabetes or cystic fibrosis; compromised immune system, (HIV); and those who take medications that suppress the immune system.
The danger of these bacteria also derives from the fact that they can infect the entire human body: epithelial system, bone system, ears, eyes, urinary tract, lungs, heart valves, wounds (such as burns, injuries or surgical wounds).
The use of medical devices, such as mechanical ventilators, intubation cannulas, and catheters inserted into the bladder or vein, increases the risk of infection with this bacterium.
Generally, Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections must be treated with a carefully chosen combination of antimicrobial drugs and specific antibiotics. In some instances the removal of necrotic tissue or the drainage of abscesses is necessary. Amputation is only done in extreme cases.
